Grandma's Southern Cornbread Dressing Recipe
Nothing goes better with a juicy turkey and creamy gravy than some moist, soulful cornbread dressing. I use to could eat this stuff by the spoonfuls when I was younger, which is probably why I still prefer my grandmothers flavorful dressing to this day.
I love the texture of this cornbread dressing. It holds it's shape when it's cut and it's so moist and full flavor.

How to make the Best Cornbread Dressing Using Mary’s Recipe
In this YouTube Video I am showing how to make the Best Cornbread Dressing using Mary’s Recipe. Cooking cornbread dressing for Easter Sunday is a family Tradition. The Secret is using Morrison Corn Kits Mix. I’m making cornbread dressing from my recipe in Mary’s Kitchen. This is how my grandmother cooked dressing except she had to make cornbread from scratch.
Cornbread Dressing Recipe
5 Packages Morrison Cornkits
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped white onions
1 cup chopped green onions
5-6 cans of Swanson Chicken Broth 14.5 oz cans
1 can Campbell’s Cream of Chicken Soup 10.5 oz
1 can Campbell’s Cream of Celery Soup 10.5 oz
1 can Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup 10.5 oz
1/2 sleeve Saltine Crackers-crumble
5 slices of white bread-crumble
8 raw eggs
1 tsp Accent Flavor Enhancer
1 tsp Ground Sage
Bake your Morrison Corn Kits per the package instructions, let it cool then crumble it up until real fine. Chop celery, white onions, and green onions and put them in a small pan, add 1 can Swanson Chicken Broth then bring that to a boil until vegetables are soft. Add vegetables to cornbread and stir them in. Add another can Chicken Broth, add Cream Soups and stir them into the mixture. Add Crackers and white bread stir. Add Chicken Broth until dressing is not stiff because you have to bake it. Let this cool some then add 8 raw eggs, Accent, and Ground Sage. Stir dressing up really good. I make my dressing the night before, let it cool, wrap it in foil the pan I’m going to bake it in and place in frig. 1 hour before you are going to serve it, bake 1 hour on 350-400 degrees. Ovens are different. Don’t let it get too dry, stir a couple of times to keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Serve when the top is brown. Watch me on the Video to see the consistency.❤️

Candied Sweet Potatoes here:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup finely chopped white onion
1 cup finely chopped celery
1/4 cup finely chopped green peppers
4 garlic cloves minced
2 teaspoons ground sage Adjust to taste. 5 leaves if using fresh
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
14 oz cream of chicken soup
3 cups chicken broth
2 eggs beaten
8 oz cooked skinless chicken breasts shredded
You will need cooked cornbread for this recipe. You can find my Homemade Cornbread recipe here. You can also use boxed cornbread if you wish. After preparing the cornbread, store it in the fridge overnight and prep the dressing using day old cornbread.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Heat a skillet on medium-high heat. When hot, add the olive oil, celery, onions, garlic, and green peppers.
Saute until the onions are translucent, fragrant, and the vegetables are soft. Remove the vegetables from the pan. Set aside to cool while prepping the remaining ingredients.
Place day old cornbread in a large mixing bowl. Use a large spoon and/or your hands to break down the cornbread. You want to fully crumble it.
Add in the sauteed veggies, ground sage, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Stop and taste the mixture here. This is where you want to adjust the seasoning and spice if necessary to suit your taste. Before adding the eggs, taste the dressing.
Add in the eggs and cream of chicken soup. Stir.
Slowly pour in the chicken broth. The chicken broth quantity noted above is a guide. You have to really monitor the dressing as you prepare it to determine how much broth you will need and if you will need more or less.
Start with a little chicken broth and then stir until the dressing is thick. Add more when needed. You should get the consistency of thick oatmeal.
Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray.
Add in 1/2 of the dressing mixture and spread it throughout the bottom of the pan.
Add the shredded chicken on top.
Top it with a layer of the remaining dressing.
Bake for 40-45 minutes uncovered until a toothpick returns clean.

Family's Favorite Southern Cornbread Dressing Recipe
A Southern Cornbread Dressing recipe that is made from gluten-free cornbread, the “holy trinity”, andouille sausage, and blackened seasoning. This easy cornbread dressing has been served as a traditional Thanksgiving Day side dish recipe at our holiday table for decades.
20 oz. package gluten free cornbread mix, cooked in a 9 x 13 inch pan according to package directions
13 oz. package of link sausage, cut into ½ inch pieces
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
4 stalks celery, finely chopped
1 small sweet onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 Tbsp. olive oil
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. pepper
3 to 4 cups chicken broth, regular sodium
1 Tbsp. blackened seasoning mix
½ - 1 tsp. salt, to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook sausage over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until sausage is browned. Remove sausage from pan and set aside.
With remaining sausage grease, add 2 tablespoons olive oil, bell pepper, onion, celery, ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.
Saute vegetables for 8-10 minutes over medium heat, or until onions begin to brown.
Add crushed garlic and continue cooking for 2 minutes.
While vegetables are cooking, whisk together blackened seasoning mix.
Crumble cornbread until there are no large clumps remaining.
Combine sausage, vegetables, seasoning mix, salt, and cornbread in the baking dish. Toss to mix thoroughly.
Pour 3 - 3 ½ cups of chicken broth into cornbread mixture. (This may seem like a lot at first, but remember, you will be baking this and a lot of the moisture will evaporate.)
Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, or until the top begins to get crispy. Add more chicken broth as needed.
Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Top with finely chopped parsley and enjoy!
You can also use 2 ½ - 3 teaspoons of Tony Chacere’s seasoning. (This is not certified gluten-free.)
