THE BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE
SEARCHING FOR THE BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE OUT THERE? LOOK NO FURTHER, BECAUSE WE’RE MAKING JARS FILLED WITH AN
EXCEPTIONALLY FLAVOURED SPREAD – YUM!

Carol and I were super excited to receive a call from the Ontario Apple Growers inviting us to join them for a tour of local apple orchards. “Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?” we thought. “You bet!” And so off we went.
Our day in apple country found us in the company of some like-minded foodies, good people all around. We learned about how apple trees are planted, when they bloom, how apples are picked and how they get from the orchard to us. Special thanks to our friends at Wilmot Orchards and Algoma Orchards who shared their knowledge and passion for this most beloved fruit.
For me, there were two key takeaways, the first being that I live in an area that grows some seriously awesome fruit.
Second key takeaway was to make something fabulous with these apples. I was practically giddy from their heady fragrance when I heard a little voice (swear) say, “Apple Butter! Show people how to make apple butter, Nik!” Well, I grabbed Carol and three bags of apples and hit the road. I had a plan!
Before listing key considerations on making THE BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE EVER, I wanted to remind you to click HERE for a refresher on HOME CANNING. If you've you’ve never canned before, this is an excellent recipe to try your hand at, as is our GARLIC DILL PICKLES and our ANTIPASTO SAUCE.
I’d also like to mention my overall goal of making a traditional apple butter with little waste. Since this is an unpeeled apple butter recipe, expect tons of flavour. I used two different varieties and again, head HERE to see a chart that may assist you in picking the perfect apples for your recipe.
Let’s do this, friends! We’re making the BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE ever and here’s how we do it.
Gala apples get top marks for their sweet flavour and fine texture. They’re also very aromatic and work especially well when cooked for sauces and recipes such as this.
These relative newcomers to the apple party (the variety was discovered recently on a farm in B.C.!) are firm-textured. They have a distinctive cream-coloured flesh and are sweet and juicy. They cook down nicely in this recipe and they’re equally as good enjoyed raw – they have some bite!
I found the following measurements useful when I went to figure out the quantities of sugar and spices. I purposely reduced the sugar for this recipe by almost half because the AMBROSIAS were so sweet. A sugar-reduced recipe is always preferred. You can halve this recipe and still have the same tasty results, although I’d purée the apple butter and check its consistency at the 1½ hour mark.
1 medium-sized apple = about 1 cup
1 pound of apples = about 3 cups
16 pounds of apples = about 48 cups
This recipe yields 30 x 250ml jars of apple butter
Although I could have attempted this recipe using a slow cooker, I opted for the more traditional method of making apple butter on the stovetop. I like participating in the cooking process – stirring this traditional apple butter recipe every 15 minutes as it cooks is important. Not only does it prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot, it also causes the gentle evaporation of liquid, which creates a very fragrant cottage or home.
Another thing to mention on the cooking front is just the concept of apple butter vs. applesauce. Although do love applesauce, I find the rich, flavourful taste of apple butter to be way more enjoyable and memorable. This happens when you cook apples slowly in this way.
What to do once you’ve made it... fill your jars, process them, finished them with paper caps and string and Give them away to the important people in your life. They’ll love you and the apple butter and all will be perfect in your world – true story, guaranteed.
I’ve presented my three favourite ways of enjoying apple butter in the video, but in case you missed it, try dipping veggies into it or serving it on fancy crackers with cheddar, apple slices and freshly cracked black pepper. My ultimate favourite is a toasted English muffin smeared with peanut butter then a swipe of apple butter – amazing!
Pick your favourite apples because it’s time to make THE BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE!

In this video, Ginny makes apple butter using her family recipe that her Mom has used for years. It turns out great everytime!! As long as you stay with it & stir, stir, stir it will make your taste buds happy everytime you put it on a biscuit or toast!
Here is the recipe:
18 Apples (medium size) we used 2 different varieties
(peeled, cored & quartered)
2 Quarts of Apple Cider
3 Cups of Sugar
1 1/2 t Cinnamon

Add sugar & spices, cook slowly, stirring often! (about 25 minutes)....or as Momma wrote, until thick & gets a sheen to it!
Fill clean jars & seal with hot lids.....process for 10 minutes.

How to Make & Can Apple Butter
Chef Janie's Apple Butter Recipe: Makes: 5-6 pints
1-1/2 Gallons of homemade or store bought applesauce
1 qt sugar for unsweetened or 2 pints sugar for pre-sweetened applesauce
1-2 Tbsp. powder cinnamon
1 - 2 tsp powder clove
10 drops cinnamon oil or to taste
Bake all the above in 250* oven for about 6 hours. Stirring twice during baking period.
Water bath can apple butter by covering in 1 of water over top of jar lids. Bring to boil and bathe for 10 minutes more. Let cool down in water bath for 5 minute to reduce boil burns and splashes to arms or hands. Remove jars with jar lifter to towel/counter top in a draft-free space. Let rest for one hour and then check seals. Seals should not 'bounce' when pressed. Let set for 24 hours and remove rings off lids if desired and store for up to 18 months...Keep in dark, cool space. ENJOY!

How to Make Apple Butter: Noreen's Kitchen
Greetings! I spend the day making apple butter. I started it on Friday evening and threw all of the apple and pears into my Nesco 18 quart roaster oven. I do it this way because it is easy, it is large and I get at least 36 half pints when I do it this way.
My recipe is 75% apples and 25% pears, peeled and sliced. Add a bit of water to prevent scorching and allow the fruit to cook down for a couple hours. When you check it and the fruit is starting to break down, add your sugar and spices.
I added 5 pounds of sugar to this batch as well as 1 cup of apple pie spice. If you purchase your spices in large containers like at Sam's or Costco, you will find them to be very affordable.
Let the apple, sugar and spice mixture cook at least 8 hours until the fruit becomes very soft. I always blend my apple butter with an immersion blender. It makes quick work of the job and you can do it in the roaster without transferring hot fruit to a blender. After the fruit is blended and smooth, allow to cook for another 2 to 3 hours. Then it is ready to can and process.
I canned mine in half pint jars and got 36 jars. I usually only make this about every two years. I plan on putting several jars on my Etsy shop so I was happy to get such a high yield.
I processed the jars in a water bath canner for 15 minutes and then allowed them to cool.
Now we are all set in the apple butter department for a couple years!
I hope you try this and I hope you love it!
