How to Make Kuli Kuli - Peanut Snacks Recipe | KuliKuli Recipe. Easy Snacks Recipe with Peanuts. Kuli Kuli is a common Snack made from Peanuts and it is very common in West Africa, especially Northern Nigeria. KuliKuli is called by various English names such as groundnut cake, groundnut cookies, or peanut snacks (it is not an English recipe), so the English name is based on different views of individuals.
- 5 cups of Peanuts (Groundnut)
Other seasonings such as sugar, ginger powder, or salt can be added.
In this recipe, I will be using sugar to it.
How to make Kuli Kuli at Home:
- First, the peanuts are roasted (see how to roast peanuts in an oven:
- Then the roasted peanuts are blended with a powerful blender or food processor into smooth Peanut Butter without adding any water during the blending process (See how to make peanut butter:
- Peanut oil is then extracted from the peanut butter by constant stirring and adding a little amount of water at a time (I added 1 tablespoon of water at a time and then stir continuously). See how to make peanut oil at home:
- Once the peanut oil is extracted, you are left with a thick peanut paste.
- In a mixing bowl, add your seasoning: sugar or salt or ginger powder and mix with the peanut paste until it is well combined.
- Roll into small balls, bars, or cookie-like shapes. The shape depends on you.
- Heat a pan and add cooking oil; most times, the peanut oil you extracted is also used for frying the peanut snacks.
- When the oil is heated, add the molded peanut paste into it and fry. Every 30 seconds, flip them in order to fry evenly. You don't need to fry for long. It usually takes about 5 minutes on medium heat to fry your Kuli Kuli.
- Remove from the oil and drain over a strainer or paper towel. Allow it to cool. It becomes crispy and crunchy when cooled.
Your Kuli Kuli is ready to be eaten. In Nigeria, we often eat this with Garri, Pap, or Rice Pudding. It is also used for making Suya Spice. Kuli Kuli can be eaten as a snack. It is a very common Peanut Recipe in Nigeria especially Northern Nigeria.

Kuli kuli is a delicious protein rich snack that can be enjoyed on its own with a refreshing chilled drink or may be used as a base in the preparation of suya spice mix. I’ve even used it as a crunchy, crouton-like element in my salads and it was just fantastic!!
* 600 grams of peanut butter/ paste (ie peanuts that’s roasted and ground into paste without additives)
* 1/2 medium shallot onion
* 1/2 habanero chili (seeds and white membrane removed to eliminate heat)
* 20 grams of peeled fresh ginger
* 3 sticks of grains of Selina (whentia)
* Pinch of salt
* 80ml warm water
* 1/4 cup of warm water to blend spices
First, pour oil out if risen to top of jar, add 40ml warm water to peanut paste and massage till loose consistency is achieved and set aside. Blend chilis, whentia, ginger, shallot, and salt with 1/4 cup warm water, and strain to remove roughage, and incorporate half of the strained spice mixture into peanut paste, massage till oil begins to separate from peanut paste.
Then, manually squeeze as much oil out of the peanut curd and cover with lint-less kitchen paper towels and place between 2 heavy objects for 30mins till most of rest of oil is extracted. Then, remove curd from oil-soaked paper towels and add 40mls of warm water and massage into curd till clay-like, play dough texture is obtained and mould into desired shapes and fry in peanut oil over medium heat for about 8 minutes, until dry and crunchy, or until golden brown and enjoy!

A few days ago American comedian Tony Woods tweeted me to “stop taking pictures and help!”
Well he is right, you see as a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker it is impossible not to get affected by the lives of those I photograph and document.
I spent the last 3 months in Nigeria setting up collectives for the Hausa/Fulani women Langa Langa Women Kuli Kuli Collective, beekeepers, sesame seeds, millet, rice and beans collectives.
My goal with these collectives is to place organic foods grown and made in Nigeria in every food store worldwide.
The Langa Langa Women Kuli Kuli Collective is designed to empower and improve the living conditions of these women.
We are currently working on our app and online marketplace where you can order their kuli kuli from anywhere in the world.

Kuli-kuli is a West African food that is primarily made from peanuts. It is a popular snack in Nigeria, Benin, northern Cameroon and Ghana. It is often eaten alone or with a mixture of garri, sugar and water popularly called garri soakings. It is also eaten with koko, fura, kamu; and is sometimes ground and put into salad. It is often ground as used as an ingredient for Suya and Kilishi
To make Kuli-kuli, peanuts are roasted and then ground into a paste called Labu. The paste is then mixed with spices, salt, and sometimes ground pepper. The paste is stripped of excess oil with water, and made into the desired shape (round balls, cylinders, etc.). The oil removed in this process is then heated and used to fry the shaped peanut paste until it solidifies. It is then removed from the oil and allowed to cool down until ready to be eaten.
