A simple recipe for Homemade Apple Butter that you can make in the slow cooker. Use as a spread, a syrup or in your fall recipes! It’s one of the best apple recipes to make during the fall!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN APPLESAUCE AND APPLE BUTTER?
Both apple butter and apple sauce are slow cooked apples and spices. Apple butter is cooked longer than applesauce which creates a thick, smooth, intense apple flavored spread.
HOW TO MAKE APPLE BUTTER
To make homemade apple butter, all you have to do is stick some apples in a crock pot with brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and a dash of salt. Let it sit there all day, stirring occasionally, and BOOM! Apple Butter. It’s really that easy.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH APPLE BUTTER?
My first bite reminded me of applesauce with a bit of tang to it. I love how when I put this homemade apple butter on a piece of white, fluffy bread, it completely changes the flavor! Instant, fall-flavored bread. You can put it in muffins & biscuits.
I also like to put this homemade apple butter on ice cream. Warm it slightly in the microwave and use it as a syrup on ice cream or pancakes. Because, why not?
Ingredients
6 1/2 pounds apples peeled, cored and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Place the apples in a slow cooker.
Add the sugars, cinnamon, salt and vanilla to the crockpot. Mix well.
Cook in slow cooker on low for about 10 hours, stirring every couple hours. The apple butter should be thick and dark brown.
If desired, use a blender to puree the apple butter until smooth.
Cover and refrigerate for up to two weeks or freeze in small containers.

I picture apple butter at local fall festivals: large cauldrons of apples cooking and smelling like autumn. On my farm, we even have some large brass buckets that, years ago, were used for apple butter making. Crazy right?!

Since I don’t think anyone needs 100 quarts of apple butter, this recipe is pared down and cooked in a slow cooker! All the autumn spice with amazing apple flavor. Plus it’s super easy!
INGREDIENTS
- 4 qt (approx. 8 lbs) apples, peeled and sliced
- 2 ¾ cups sugar
- 2 ¾ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 1 star anise pod or a pinch of anise seeds (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- ¼ tsp salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Wash, core and take out the seeds from the apples. Slice into 1/2” pieces.
Measure out four quarts of apples. Pour all apples into slow cooker.
Add sugar, cinnamon, cloves, anise pod, salt, and lemon juice. Stir to incorporate everything.
Turn slow cooker on high for 4-5 hours. After the first hour, remove the star anise pod, if added. Stir the apples every so often.
Once the mixture is bubbling and cooking well (after approximately 1-2 hours), turn the slow cooker to low and leave for 10-12 hours. I usually do this in the evening so it can sit on the low setting overnight.
After ten hours, start checking the slow cooker. Stir mixture using a strong wire whisk or hand potato masher to break up the apples. Turn the cooker on high and remove the lid to cook off extra liquid.
Once the butter is the consistency desired, use a blender, food processor, or immersion blender to break down the rest of the apples to achieve an even consistency.
Let cool. Freeze or can the mixture.

Hello friends! Thanks for tuning in to another episode of my Fall series! This apple butter is amazing, and I really think you will LOVE it! :)
Here is the recipe:
-6 pounds of apples, peeled/cored/chopped into large chunks (I always use 2 lb. Granny Smith, 2 lb. Gala, and 2 lb. Golden Delicious- if you use all Granny Smith, add 1/2 cup more sugar)
-3/4 cup granulated sugar
-3/4 cup brown sugar
-1 1/2 Tbsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice
-1/2 tsp. salt
1. Put everything into your crock pot and mix well.
2. Cover and turn on low for 8-10 hours.
3. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Partially cover again and cook on high for another hour- just to thicken it up.
4. Let it cool before storing in an airtight container. This will last several weeks in your fridge.
*My mom and I usually cans this so we can give it away as gifts or use later.

Old Fashioned Apple Butter - 100 Year Old Recipe - SIMPOT - In this video, I'll be making fresh apple butter and I'll be doing it in the kind of programmable Simpot that I'm giving away. Apple butter dates back to the middle ages. You can get the same rich flavor with this method without the intensive labor. I'm also giving away this 8 qt. Simpot on September 5, 2019.

Ingredients for 8 pints of apple butter:
8 to 10 lbs. of apples
2 cups of brown sugar
2 cups of white sugar
1 cup of juice or water (I used apple cider)
2 teaspoons of vanilla
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons of nutmeg
2 teaspoons of salt
***All spices will have to be adjusted to taste
***Blow that apple butter before you taste it fresh out of the pot. It's boiling hot!! Bret cut that part out of the video.
Crockpot Apple Butter + Canning | EASY!
What will you need??
Spices of your choice. REALLY I don't think you could mess this up.
My sister added Apple Pie spice, and ground cloves. And it was still similar, you could barely taste any difference.
Pick any apples you'd like! The more the better!!
Canning | Pick the jar size of your choice.
When you fill the jars , make sure you leave about a half inch head space (Space from the top of the jar to the filling) wipe off any food that may be on the top of the jar.
Simmer your lids in a pot of water while you are filling the jars.
(jars need to be cleaned with hot soapy water. I wash my in the dish washer and keep them there till I am ready to use them. )
Use tongs to pick up lids, and place on jar. Try and not touch the lids or jars so you will not get any bacteria inside the jars.
Process the jars for 30 mins. Take out, and place on a towel to seal, and cool.
THEN ENJOY!

Slow cooker applesauce and apple butter are easy, tasty and frugal. In today's cook with me video, I share how to make Crockpot applesauce and apple butter!
Any applesauce is full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. No sugar applesauce will be tart but edible. I use a cup of sugar in each slow cooker which makes it sweet but not over the top. You could leave out the sugar or add in any sweetener of your choice like stevia or honey.
In this slow cooker applesauce and apple butter recipes, I use 20 lbs of red delicious apples that we peel, core, and divide between two 8 qt Crockpots. I hope you enjoy making homemade applesauce and apple butter with me!

This simple apple butter recipe is made in a crockpot and requires only minutes of prep time. Thanks to the slow cooker, you can set yours up before you go to bed, let it cook overnight, and enjoy fresh apple butter in the morning.
Ingredients
5.5 lbs Golden Delicious Apples cored and chopped into small pieces, about 1/4” (2.5kg)
1 cup brown sugar tightly packed (200g)
3/4 cup sugar (150g)
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 vanilla bean or 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. 00:52 Slice apples into small pieces (about 1/4) and dispose of cores.
2. 01:11 Place apples in the basin of large slow cooker
3. 01:21 In a medium-sized bowl stir together sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and cloves until well-combined.
4. 01:42 Pour sugar mixture over apple pieces and stir until well combined.
5. 01:55 Cook covered in crockpot over low heat for 10 hours.Once 10 hours has elapsed, either use an immersion blender** to puree apples until smooth and no chunks remain.Scrape the inside of the vanilla bean into your apple puree (or add vanilla extract).
6. 03:29 Turn crockpot on to low heat and cook another 2 hours uncovered, stirring occasionally.Store apple butter in the refrigerator in an airtight container, will keep about 2 weeks.
Notes
Weigh before coring and chopping. For me this was about 13 apples. You do not need to peel your apples.

Carol and I were super excited to receive a call from the Ontario Apple Growers inviting us to join them for a tour of local apple orchards. “Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?” we thought. “You bet!” And so off we went.
Our day in apple country found us in the company of some like-minded foodies, good people all around. We learned about how apple trees are planted, when they bloom, how apples are picked and how they get from the orchard to us. For me, there were two key takeaways, the first being that I live in an area that grows some seriously awesome fruit.
Second key takeaway was to make something fabulous with these apples. I was practically giddy from their heady fragrance when I heard a little voice (swear) say, “Apple Butter! Show people how to make apple butter, Nik!” Well, I grabbed Carol and three bags of apples and hit the road. I had a plan!
Before listing key considerations on making THE BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE EVER, I wanted to remind you to click HERE for a refresher on HOME CANNING. If you've you’ve never canned before, this is an excellent recipe to try your hand at, as is our GARLIC DILL PICKLES and our ANTIPASTO SAUCE.
I’d also like to mention my overall goal of making a traditional apple butter with little waste. Since this is an unpeeled apple butter recipe, expect tons of flavour. I used two different varieties and again, head HERE to see a chart that may assist you in picking the perfect apples for your recipe.
Let’s do this, friends! We’re making the BEST APPLE BUTTER RECIPE ever and here’s how we do it.
GALA APPLES
Gala apples get top marks for their sweet flavour and fine texture. They’re also very aromatic and work especially well when cooked for sauces and recipes such as this.
AMBROSIA APPLES
These relative newcomers to the apple party (the variety was discovered recently on a farm in B.C.!) are firm-textured. They have a distinctive cream-coloured flesh and are sweet and juicy. They cook down nicely in this recipe and they’re equally as good enjoyed raw – they have some bite!
MEASUREMENTS
I found the following measurements useful when I went to figure out the quantities of sugar and spices. I purposely reduced the sugar for this recipe by almost half because the AMBROSIAS were so sweet. A sugar-reduced recipe is always preferred. You can halve this recipe and still have the same tasty results, although I’d purée the apple butter and check its consistency at the 1½ hour mark.
1 medium-sized apple = about 1 cup
1 pound of apples = about 3 cups
16 pounds of apples = about 48 cups
This recipe yields 30 x 250ml jars of apple butter
COOKING
Although I could have attempted this recipe using a slow cooker, I opted for the more traditional method of making apple butter on the stovetop. I like participating in the cooking process – stirring this traditional apple butter recipe every 15 minutes as it cooks is important. Not only does it prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot, it also causes the gentle evaporation of liquid, which creates a very fragrant cottage or home.
Another thing to mention on the cooking front is just the concept of apple butter vs. applesauce. Although do love applesauce, I find the rich, flavourful taste of apple butter to be way more enjoyable and memorable. This happens when you cook apples slowly in this way.

Although I do not have their exact formulation, I believe this recipe is as close as it gets. I am not claiming to have invented this because I actually found this on Pinterest a couple of years ago and made it for the first time last Fall. I plan on making this an annual tradition, so I thought I’d share this yumminess with you because sharing is caring. Lol
Apple Butter Recipe:
Ingredients:
Peeled apples- 6 lbs
Apple Cider Vinegar- 1/2 cup
Water- 1.5 cups
Sugar- 2 cups
Brown Sugar- 3 cups
Cinnamon- 2 Tbs
Ground Cloves- ¾ Tsp
AllSpice- ½ Tsp
1/2 Lemon
Honey- 3 Tbs (if bitter)

CROCK POT APPLE BUTTER
Approximately 3 lb. apples
3 cups sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. Chinese five spice
Dash of salt
3/4 cup water or fresh apple cider
Fill Crock-pot 3/4 full with peeled, cored and sliced apples. Add the remaining ingredients and stir until evenly mixed. Cover and cook on low setting overnight or until the butter thick.
If apple butter has too much liquid, remove lid and cook on high until thickened. Stir often as butter thickens to prevent scorching.
Store in refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. Freeze for longer storage.

How to Make Apple Butter Recipe
This is a easy apple butter recipe with or without sugar. How to peel and cut up lots of extra apples to make a delicious homemade apple butter. This recipe uses the crock pot for a carefree, easy recipe. Different methods of peeling apples are demonstrated. Make sweet or sugar-free version - your choice!

Apple Butter Recipe Ingredients:
12 large apples, peeled, cored, finely chopped
2 cinnamon sticks
1 TBSP whole cloves
1 quick grind of nutmeg
Apple juice or cider (to cover bottom of crockpot)

This is a classic recipe you must try in the slow cooker! This apple butter is great for breakfast or even on ice cream.
RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS:
5 lbs. apples Any variety works fine! (I use gala)
1 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
½ tsp. ground nutmeg
¼ tsp. ground cloves
2 dashes salt
SLOW COOKER SIZE:
INSTRUCTIONS:
Peel, core and slice the apples.
Add the apples to the slow cooker. Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
Stir.
Cover and cook on HIGH for 5 hours or LOW for 8-10 hours.
After the apples have cooked, place them and any liquid that the apples made into a blender, cover with lid, and a towel on top of that (to prevent burns, in case the lid flies off). Hold the lid on while the blender is on. Pulse for about a minute, until very smooth.
OR use an immersion blender right in the slow cooker (as shown in the video).

w easy it is to make and that it’s actually healthy too!

COOKING TIPS
Crockpot apple butter is naturally gluten free, dairy free, and vegan.
You can reduce the amount of sugar by omitting the brown sugar. If you do omit the sugar, consider using a sweeter variety of apple, such as Gala or Red Delicious, as Granny Smith apples will make pretty sour apple butter without the sugar.
Typically, I will use half Granny Smith apples, and half of a sweeter variety, usually Gala or Red Delicious. Fuji or Golden apples will also work. You can also choose to use all of one kind.
To make your apple butter silky smooth, make sure they are cooked long enough to be broken down. They should be so soft that they fall apart when you stir them. Then puree them thoroughly using your food processor, blender, or immersion blender.
To store, place in a container with a lid (I use mason jars.) in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
To freeze, place in a freezer safe container, covered for up to 3-6 months.
Stovetop directions: Place all ingredients plus 1 cup apple juice in a large heavy bottom pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for about 2 hours until apples are soft and broken down. Then follow steps 4-6 of the recipe to finish your apple butter.

5 1⁄2 lbs apples, peeled and finely chopped (I use 3-4 different types of apples)
4 cups sugar
2 -3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1⁄4 teaspoon ground cloves
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
Place apples in a large bowl.
Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt.
Pour over apples and mix well.
Place in crock pot, cover and cook on high for 1 hour.
Decrease heat to low; cover and cook on low for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown.
Stir occasionally.
Uncover and cook on low for 1 hour longer.
If desired, whisk until smooth.
Spoon into freezer containers, leaving 1/2-inch head space.
Cover and freeze.
