Chef Sabi's Cooking the Casbah with the Kids
Chef Sabi Atteyih was born in Kuwait as a Palestinian refugee. His parents moved to Damascus, Syria when he was 5 years old, He spent the majority of his childhood in the Eastern Mediterranean. He has fond memories of making food from scratch with his family. Many of his recipes and cooking techniques, he learned from his mother. After his father died, his mother brought Sabi and three siblings to the U.S. Sabi graduated from Madison East High School. He received an Associates degree in Commercial Art from the Madison Area Technical College and Bachelors in Business- Marketing from the UW-Madison. Sabi acquired much of his culinary knowledge working as a cook for his mother at the family restaurant, Lulu's on Old University Ave. (1984-2011).
In 1999, Chef Sabi opened The Casbah Restaurant and Lounge on Madison's Capitol Square (1999-2007). The restaurant received numerous awards and great reviews for its Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine with recipes from Spain, Morocco, Turkey and Lebanon.
From 2003 to 2007, Chef Sabi hosted his local television cooking show, Cooking the Casbah. He also appeared locally on both ABC and CBS morning shows where he demonstrated Mediterranean and other recipes with locally grown ingredients.
Sabi has cooked with his friend, Shelley Ryan on her PBS show, The Wisconsin Gardner. In 2007, Sabi became a father, sold The Casbah and became a chef for the University of Wisconsin-Housing's food service specializing in global cuisine and catering.
Sabi continues his commitment to great food service as a Chef at the University of Wisconsin Union-South. He shares his passion for healthy food culture as Mini Courses instructor. Courses are offered through the Wisconsin Union.
